If you are replacing an existing window and are able to install a new window with a nail-on flange, the best way to measure is from the inside. Remove the interior window trim or casing to expose the edges of the wall studs. If you still can not see the studs you may have to remove the window liner to expose the bare face of the studs. From here measure the width of the rough opening between the studs and then the height of the rough opening.
A Lesson in Sizing
The window industry can be very complicated if you don't know a little "window language" and some useful information to help you purchase the right size for your home. Window dealers list their standard sizes in inches or feet depending on the manufacturer, but the product size is the same. You may see a size listed as 20x20 at one dealer and a 2020 at another. The first size is in inches (20" x 20") and the latter is in feet (2' x 2'). Gienow uses feet when listing their standard sizes which would be a 2020. To make things easier for our customers we list the windows in our own way with both feet and inches such as 2'0" x 2'0" but you will also see the technical listing here for inventory purposes. To complicate things further these standard sizes are nominal sizes. A 2x4 piece of lumber is not actually 2" x 4" and neither is a window. It is also not the dimension of the nail-on flange. To determine the true size of the window (called the heel) you must subtract 1.5" from the nominal size. For instance if a 2020 is 24" x 24" then the actual size of the window is 22.5" x 22.5". This is the measurement needed to determine if the window will fit in your rough opening. Window sizes are always listed and measured by width first and then height.
Understanding Window Configurations
Although windows being replaced should be measured from the inside, the direction of opening and the configuration must be determined from the outside. Each section of a window is called a "lite". A horizontal slider has one or more sliding vent lites that slide from side to side. These opening vents are referred to by an "x". If the fixed lite of the window is the same size as the "x" then it is referred to as an "o". If the fixed lite is not the same size as the "x" then it is referred to as a "p". For example: a window with two lites with one fixed lite and one vent that opens from left to right as seen from the outside is referred to as an "xo". The majority of the horizontal sliders in stock at Demxx are xo units.
